A Symbol of a Nation: The 96-Metre Dome
The Hungarian Parliament Building is a monument to national identity, constructed between 1885 and 1904 to celebrate a millennium of Hungarian statehood. Its central dome rises to a height of exactly 96 metres, a direct reference to the year 896, when the Magyar tribes first settled the Carpathian Basin. This symbolic height is shared only by St. Stephen's Basilica, signifying the equal importance of state and church in Hungary.
The interior is just as symbolic and opulent, decorated with over 40 kilograms of 22-23 carat gold and hundreds of statues. The guided tour culminates in the Dome Hall, where visitors can see the Holy Crown of Hungary, the coronation regalia used to crown over fifty Hungarian kings since the 12th century. It rests under constant guard, a powerful symbol of Hungary's thousand-year history.
