What to See on Your Tour

The Grand Staircase

Your tour begins by ascending the magnificent Grand Staircase. Adorned with red carpets, gilded decorations, and stunning frescoes by Károly Lotz, this opulent entrance sets the tone for the rest of the visit. The impressive scale and intricate details immediately showcase the building's grandeur.

The Dome Hall

The heart of the building is the hexadecagonal (sixteen-sided) central hall beneath the 96-metre-high dome. Here, you will find Hungary's most sacred national relics: the Holy Crown, the Sceptre, the Orb, and the Sword of the coronation regalia. The hall is guarded by soldiers of the Hungarian Armed Forces.

The Old Upper House Hall

As Hungary's legislature is now unicameral, one of the two identical assembly halls is used for tours. You will visit the Old Upper House Hall, a stunning chamber with rich oak panelling, gold leaf decorations, and a gallery for visitors. It provides a fascinating insight into Hungary's political history.

Getting There and Practical Information

The Parliament Visitor Centre is located on the north side of Kossuth Lajos Square. The easiest way to reach it is via the M2 (red) metro line or Tram 2, both stopping at Kossuth Lajos tér.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time to allow for the mandatory security check. Large bags, backpacks, and sharp objects are not permitted inside; a free cloakroom is available. Remember that photography is forbidden in the Dome Hall, so be prepared to put your camera away for that part of the tour.

Where does the tour start?
All tours start from the underground Visitor Centre, located on the north side of Kossuth Lajos Square.
What happens if I'm late for my tour?
Due to the strict schedule, latecomers may not be able to join their tour, and tickets are non-refundable in this case. It is crucial to arrive 15 minutes early.
Can I explore the building on my own after the tour?
No, visitors must stay with their group and exit the building once the 45-minute guided tour is complete.
Is there a dress code?
There is no strict dress code, but visitors are asked to dress respectfully. Displaying symbols of dictatorship is forbidden. See our rules page for more.
Are there restrooms available?
Yes, restrooms are available for visitors in the Visitor Centre before and after the tour.
Can I see the Parliament in session?
Tours do not include viewing parliamentary sessions. In fact, tours may be cancelled at short notice if the National Assembly is in session, so always check your booking confirmation.
